The technical bits
Solar panels are also called PV (Photovoltaic) panels, because photovoltaic cells in the panel capture the energy from the sun. In these layered cells (silicon, thin-film or other) the sunlight creates an electrical current; this is DC current, which the inverter turns into AC power suitable for any home appliance, battery storage or feeding into the grid.
