Nice and cosy. Or would you prefer some backup ?

Home batteries to boost efficiency

Does it make sense ?

Energy prices aren't very stable, to say the least. If you have solar PV panels installed or are considering them, then you should also consider installing a home battery. You can store the surplus energy generated by your solar panels during the day, and use it to cover your power needs in the evening and during the night. You store energy at a low price and use it when buying it from the grid would be expensive, and you can "shave" your power peaks to lower your bill even more. And if you get the right type of home battery, you can use it as a backup in case of a blackout.

Frequently Asked Questions

But we're sure you can come up with more questions. No problem, just send us a mail !

Is it a sound investment ?

Arrow icon

We can't predict the future. Batteries are still relatively expensive, and much will depend on your actual situation. Do you generate a lot of unused power during the day, and do you charge your car every night? Then you should absolutely get a battery. Do you only have a few PV panels and consume very little during the night? Then don't bother, you won't benefit financially -which doesn't mean a battery can't still be nice-to-have in some cases.

What capacity do I need ?

Arrow icon

That depends on your consumption profile and the size of your PV system. We'll run some simulations and propose a suitable solution. The idea is to use as much of the battery charge as possible overnight, and charge it during the day. Of course we don't recommend oversizing; it's useless to have a battery you can't fully charge because your PV system doesn't have the capacity.

Does it need maintenance ?

Arrow icon

Not really, although a quick check from time to time is not a bad idea.

How much space do I need ?

Arrow icon

That would depend on the battery's capacity. Something like a small fridge, washing machine or gas boiler is about right.

What's the useful life span ?

Arrow icon

That depends on the number of cycles guaranteed by the manufacturer; depending on make and model, the useful life span will be anywhere in the 10-20 years range. Remeber, though, that batteries degrade: after 15 years you'll only have some 65% of the original capacity left. We do take that into account when calculating whether or not a battery is a good investment for you.

Do I need a permit ?

Arrow icon

Nope !

Do I need inspection and certification ?

Arrow icon

Yes, just like with any electrical installation.

Can I install one myself ?

Arrow icon

If you're an experienced electrician, sure. If not: don't try it please...

How much does it cost ?

Arrow icon

Depending on the size and brand, expect to spend 4000 to 8000 Euro. But remember, you can get government grants for batteries!

Where should I install it?

Arrow icon

Any cool place with sufficient space will do -typically a garage or storage room.

What if I'm renting my house ?

Arrow icon

Then you should ask your landlord for permission.

Can it catch fire ?

Arrow icon

Batteries can overheat -the risk is the same as with your electric bicycle, laptop or mobile phone. In any case, it's good to know that your insurance company won't charge extra if you install a home battery; you're still covered.

What happens during a blackout ?

Arrow icon

A home battery can serve as a backup during a blackout. Please note that not all batteries offer this functionality: please make sure to state clearly if this is required or not.
